TRANSIT 34: DEFINE IRONY

Array Congress and the Bush administration are proposing to spend even more billions of taxpayer dollars on something called the Millennium Challenge Account program to reduce poverty and aid in the war against terrorism in small, largely unknown countries with no national security value to the United States.5. The Bush administration and Congress continue to whine that they don’t have enough money to hire a sufficient number of Border Patrol and immigration service agents to properly enforce our immigration laws.If you answered True to each of the above six questions, give yourself a perfect score.I would just love to see what the 0 million will buy for Vanuatu. But in country with a total annual budget of 3 million dollars (6 million of it from foriegn aid) I can’t fathom what 0 million more will be spent on in regard to the war on terrorism.Again…

If a particular dog happens to have someone looking out for it that really just means he gets some scraps handed to him, rather than digging through the trash himself.Maybe I shouldn’t generalize - I’m sure some dogs are well cared for by locals somewhere, but the dogs we have seen look like they walked off an animal rights poster.

-ne Today was the most awesome day yet - one long day of food and pleasure!!The morning started with a trip to the market where we were encouraged to speak Bislama to the merchants to start learning the names of the different foods. Another batch included meats which i didn’t eat but everyone said was amazing. Then here young daughter came out and did a series of hula-type dances native to the Cook Islands.Pretty amazing day.Tomorrow our world changes completely when we all move to the training village on Lelepa Island.Sorry no photos - I’m having some technical problems.

-ne Peace Corps training is like no other training in the world, having something in common with college life, officers training, Marine basic training, and a ninety day jail sentence” - Moritz Thomsen, Living PoorI dont know about Marine training but Im starting to see what this guy is getting at. This quote comes from a booklet they gave us titled “A Few Minor Adjustments” which basically lays out how we will be feeling about the various stages of training - generalized for all volunteers. The training weve been getting has been generalized over a large swath of Vanuatu life but there seems to be one central theme - island time - this is used to explain, for example, why a meeting doesnt begin until 40 minutes after it was scheduled. They never seem able to get thier heads around all the other costs they incured along the way to the market (labor in roasting the peanuts, labor in bagging the peanuts, time and cost of driving to market, cost to repay micro-finance loan to rent booth at market - for example).
